Codex usage is easy to miss when you move between the desktop app, CLI, and other ChatGPT surfaces. Before a long coding task, check the account usage view instead of assuming that every message costs the same amount.
Where to check Codex usage
- Open the Codex or ChatGPT usage area for the account you intend to use.
- Look for the usage summary, limit banner, or Settings usage view. The exact labels and available options depend on your plan and account.
- If you are working in the CLI, try
/statusin the active session when that command is available.
OpenAI's current guidance says to use the Codex usage page or limit banner when you are near a limit. It also explains that plan limits and credit options vary, so the account-specific view is the source of truth.
What the usage view is telling you
Depending on your account, you may see more than one allowance: a short usage window, a weekly allowance, a monthly or workspace allowance, or a credit balance. Treat these as separate states. One can be available while another is nearly exhausted.
Why the same plan can feel different on different days
A small function and a long-running repository refactor are not equivalent units of usage. A task that reads many files, runs tools, or keeps a large context can use more of the available allowance than a short request. This is why old screenshots and “one message equals X percent” rules are unreliable.
Codex usage can also share an agentic allowance with other supported ChatGPT features. If the remaining amount looks surprising, verify the signed-in account, workspace, and the surface where the usage was generated before concluding that the meter is wrong.
What to do when you are close to the limit
- Save the current work and check the reset information before starting another long task.
- Use a smaller scope or a lighter model when that is appropriate for the task.
- Check whether your account offers credits, an available reset, an upgrade, or only the option to wait.
- Do not assume reinstalling the client will refresh an account-side limit.
